Though it must be conceded that DC/Warner Bros have a considerable amount of catching up to do in their mission to surpass Marvel as the premier comic book movie studio on the planet, it also should be recognised that DC/Warner Bros have some very big aces up their sleeve that they will hopefully use to great effect in their forthcoming comic book outings. Leaving the legendary trio of Wonder Woman, Batman & Superman aside, here are 5 of DC/Warner Bros best weapons in the battle to best Marvel.
1 A More Serious Tone.
Don’t get us wrong, nobody wants to go see a Superhero flick with the tone of ‘Death Of A Salesman’, however we firmly believe that DC Comics & Warner Bros are onto a great thing by keeping the overall tone of their shared universe straight faced, as, aside from anything else, we believe that the more ‘real world’ aesthetic will help to make the big villains far more terrifying than their Marvel cousins, who for better or worse often come off as less dread inspiring when the movies they appear in so often drift into outright comedy. Unlike some of Marvel’s big hitters, we also believe that the fantastical likes of Superman & Batman exist best in a semi realistic world where their God like abilities and actions can truly shine.
2 The Joker.
With the arguable exception of Darth Vader, cinematic villain’s just don’t come any more iconic than everyone’s favorite psychotic clown. With close to a decade having passed since Heath Ledger did the impossible by topping Jack Nicholson’s powerhouse performance as The Clown Prince Of Crime, we feel that audiences are more hungry than ever for a new take on the crazed icon. Whoever takes on the role next will require balls of steel to survive to the inevitable internet backlash to their casting, as pretty much any actor on earth will be considered imperfect or sub-Ledger by some obnoxiously loud commentators. Who would we like to see take on the role, we hear you ask? Well, for us a top contender would certainly be Joaquin Phoenix, as he possesses both weight as a dramatic actor and the requisite flair for the theatrical.
3 Lex Luthor.
We may be in the minority here, but we at AlwaysAround reckon the casting of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor may well turn out to be a true masterstroke.Aside from anything else the actor has proven that he can convincingly play a genius level thinker with a less than wholesome character in David Fincher’s fantastic Facebook flick’The Social Network’. We also very much like the fact that we are getting a far younger version of the character than we have traditionally seen on the big screen, which hopefully should allow for some real character development throughout the movies. The one thing we demand above all other things from this new take on Luthor, however, is the inclusion of his famous green battle armor, which we hope will make it onto the silver screen by the time the Justice League arrives & make Iron-Man’s suit look like it came from IKEA.
Yes, you read that correctly, for in our opinion Aquaman is long overdue a popularity revival, and if the cinematic take on the character(reportedly being played by Jason Momoa)takes any of it’s cues from The New 52 Comic Book version we are in for one truly badass fish lover. Director Zack Snyder recently jumped to the defense of the character when some radio hosts made some less than complimentary comments about him by calling into the show and setting some things straight. The visionary director commented to the radio hosts that “You guys were disparaging, a little bit, Aquaman…I don’t want to give anything away about the movie or anything like that but Aquaman has some cool abilities. People are like, “Oh what? Does he talk to animals? Cause that seems like what he does. Or fish?” The cool thing with Aquaman is his trident, so you have to realize that it could cut the flesh of Superman if they came in contact. That’s a thing that’s in the canon. He’s super strong cause of course he can exist at these super deep depths so when he comes up here he’s crazy strong. Anyway, not to say he’s in my movie or anything like that but he has the potential to be bad ass, that’s all I’m saying.” Go on Mr Snyder, go on.
While everyone here at AlwaysAround Towers loved Thanos’s(all too brief)appearances in Guardians Of The Galaxy, the fact of the matter remains that Darkseid is the original intergalactic badass on a mission to destroy all that is, and cool as the big purple death romancer might be, DC without question have in Darkseid the undisputed champion of intergalactic villainy. We believe that with the correct treatment of the character DC/Warner Bros could create a big screen villain every bit as iconic and scary as Darth Vader himself, and with the DC movies generally more serious & dramatic tone, we feel that the ruler of Apokolips could make for a far more dread inspiring threat than the Marvel Titan he inspired.
